Long Lost Family S1E1

I’ve Waited 45 Years For This Call

Long Lost Family Season 1, Episode 1 –

The two stories in episode 1 of Season 1, titled “waited 45 years” is the story of Rita who is looking for her son she gave up for adoption and Kristen who is looking for her birth mother.

The birth mother in the first story, Rita had a son in 1983.  The hospital allowed her to see him, feed him, change him, and hold him everyday for the 5 days she was in the hospital.  Her mother didn’t want a family scandal so convinced her to give him up.  She named him John Baptist after her father.  Forced to give up her baby 31 years ago, she still holds onto his baby blanket and hopes to see him again.  She was 16 years old when she got pregnate.  When she told her high school boyfriend he kicked her out of a truck and she walked 2 miles home.  She went to an unwed mothers home in Buffalo.  She was also in high school and needed to graduate and didn’t feel she could give him the life she wanted him to have but also didn’t want to give him up..  She went on to have 2 other children but always wanted to meet her son.  She kept his hospital blanket, arm band and other things from the hospital.

Rita knew that the people that adopted her son were both parents.  She had asked that they be Italian like her family was.  Her son was born October 25th   1983  in buffalo NY.  There were about 100 boys born in Erie county on that day.  Since she said she preferred an Italian family, they first looked at people with Italian names.  After calling the men, they found John, an adoptee born on that day and grew up in Buffalo.  He had a great relationship with his adopted parents.  John talks to his adopted parents and his father didn’t want him to meet his mother.  They were afraid it would disrupt their family if he met them.

John and Rita met in Rochester NY.  They had a wonderful reunion and she showed him the blanket and armband that she had been keeping since she left the hospital.

The two stories in episode 1 of Season 1, titled “waited 45 years” is the story of Rita who is looking for her son she gave up for adoption and Kristen who is looking for her birth mother.

Kristin grew up in Scottsdale AZ with loving and caring parents.  Her father died in 1981 and her mother is in memory care.  She is 45 and looking for a mother that she knows would be 65.  She wanted her birth mother to know she turned out OK, has children, and is wants her to know she is doing well.  As a mother herself she knows her mother is probably wondering how she turned out.  Her birth father was 35 and her mother was 20.  With the age gap, she guessed that maybe her birth father was her mothers boss of some kind of situation like that. She signed up on all the birth registries trying to find her mother.  She was born in Los Angeles Ca,   She felt there has always been a connection between them even though they never met.  She hoped that by finding her birth mother she could help with any pain her mother might have.

To start the search, the searcher looked at her birth certificate and noted the day she was born.  checked on Ancestry.com in the California Birth Index  to see how many female babies were born in Los Angeles county on the same day as Kristin, January 30th, 1970. There were 185 results.  They find that one record was listed twice.  The researcher guessed that it could have resulted from a name change.

They found her mother Evelyn.  When he called Evelyn to confirm she was Kristen’s mother, she said “I’ve waited for this call for 45 years”. Evelyn had an affair with her boss at a bank, just as her daughter had suspected.  The man was married with a family and Evelyn didn’t want to disrupt their family. When she turned 21 she had surgery and was no longer able to have children so Kristin was her only child. She was thrilled that Kristen had found her.

Evelyn and Kristen were reunited in LA closed to where Kristen was born. Evelyn told her that she looked like everyone in her family.  Kristen told her that she had always loved her.  They both told each other that they were doing OK and wanted the other to know that.  They have since vacationed together and Evelyn is getting to know Kristen and her grandchildren.
